NINO's '12 Winter-Scale 6,9 Kilo

I started using a rigid carbon fork and XTR cranks...

Original Nino Schurter frameset (919g)

WR Compositi 29" fork (1211g) and -35 degree negative rise stem

Used in mud and winter....

actual weight 6,92 Kilos / 15,2 lbs

Through a friend of mine i was able to get this original Nino Schurter Scott Scale RC 29" frameset. I was sceptical about the "revolution" of the big wheels that seems to take place but since i got this frameset i thought i might try it out myself. So i set out to build myself a nice weapon...just to be able to compare it with my 26" Winterbike. At first it was not the ultimate lightweight build but just a assembly of leftover parts and some decent-light parts that i had to buy. I first wanted to see if the concept of the bigger wheels could be to my liking...

Update I: i first had some new XTR cranks installed but they showed some dramatic resistance in the bearings. So now i mounted the Lightning Carbon crankset off my Scale 899 with smaller 24/36 Truvativ rings. I also will put other tires soon.Those Maxxis Ikon don't seem to roll fast enough. I have Bontrager 29-1 on order that got weighed 477+479g...so those will drop another 100g later on and hopefully make the bike roll faster too.

Update II: Bontrager 29-1 (2,0") tires at 473 + 475g, I also installed a MCFK seatpost, FRM saddle and carbon clamp from my 899----> NOW it's a real rocketship ! 6,64 Kilos / 14,6 lbs !!

Update III: : I already ordered a nice suspension fork to be mounted on this bike. Italian manufacturer WR Compositi offers the lightest fork on the market (ca. 1270g including remote lockout) and best of all it is tunable from 60-80-100mm...so i might go with the lower 60mm setting.All i need is a little cushion over bigger hits but i would like to have the front low and agile (and light) to fight that slow and heavy feeling of the 29ers.

Update IV: my search for a superlight,suspended fork led me to the italian WR Compositi AMT 29". At just 1211g it fits my needs perfectly: At first i put it at just 60mm of travel (i definitely don't need 100mm), this keeps the handlebar low which was mandatory to get the position correct. It also makes for a aggressive headangle and still gives me that light and flickable feel i was looking for.Later on i also installed a -35 degree stem which lowered the handlebar considerably and therefore was able to raise the travel to 80mm without affecting the handlebar height. Now i can bomb down my trails as can be seen in the video below...

Update V: incredibly light carbon clincher wheels from italian manufacturer WR Compositi were the final update. At just 1258g these really transform my bike into a rocketship! Razorsharp handling , ultrafast acceleration, quick and agile...i love it!

 UpdateVI: After i had my build completed i went on and got a brandnew 2012 frameset by Thomas "Frischi" Frischknecht and moved all parts over there:

Meanwhile this frameset got assembled using "left over" parts and now acts as my spare bike ---> Winterbike!

And all those that think a rigid bike that light can't be ridden hard have a look at my 1st real ride here:
